Friday 6 April – Good Friday – Walking **** - cloudy then snowy rain later :(

We had a long lie in, read and watched the birds with the bino,s. After breakfast walked up to Risoul to have a look round and get some bread and milk. It was market day but nothing took our fancy. We walked to both sides of the village which looked a bit run down with peeling paint, litter and hundreds of cigarette ends thrown off balconies – smokers are plonkers!!! We were looking for a good walk but there didn’t appear to be anything we felt like doing so we headed back to the van, packed up and went down the mountain then back up the other side to Vars (where we skied over to yesterday). We drove up the Col de Vars (which is amazingly open) and stopped for lunch in the van. After a read and a doze (still catching up from yesterday!) we went for a walk in the snow. Luckily we put our walking boots on because what started off as a look at the notice board at the other end of the car park ended up being a hike up through the snow which ended up being waist deep at one point and scrambling up rocks and over low pine shrubs to be able to get back to the van, it even thundered a couple of times!!! All this and we never lost sight of the restaurant on the far side of the car park! It was quite an adventure! We walked down the road a little past the chapel and to a point where you could see down the valley. It is very beautiful up here and the white of the snow really hurts your eyes. We had a drink and decided to stay there the night but it suddenly clouded up and started to snow quite hard so we thought it would be quite irresponsible to stay especially when the restaurant owner headed off and we would have been up there on our own. We went back to Vars le Claux (where we had our picnic yesterday) and parked in the car park under a closed for the season lift. Had a quick tea and were settled for the night :)
